A bright red, five-pointed star, symbolizing the city of Clarksburg, composed of five former towns - served by two intersecting highways, represented by white bars extending diagonally corner to corner, across a bright blue field - the bars radiating to the four corners of the flag being likewise symbolic of Clarksburg products distributed to the four corners of the earth - a further symbolism denoting the star of hope with the sky as the limit, the colors red, white, and blue, being suggestive of the national flag, as allegiance to the City of Clarksburg implies a greater allegiance to the nation.

This is the description of the city flag as set forth in the resolution passed by the council on March 30th. The dimensions are likewise given in the resolution and are reproduced elsewhere in this issue. So far as known, Clarksburg is the first West Virginia city to adopt a municipal flag. Several other cities in different parts of the country have flags, including Pittsburgh, Birmingham, and Dallas.

The Clarksburg flag will undoubtedly play a prominent part in the decorating plans of the Chamber of Commerce homecoming committee. Arrangements are being made through the committee for the manufacture and purchase of a large number of flags and they will be on sale at several Clarksburg stores within a few weeks. Meanwhile those who wish to make their own city flags will find a full description in an accompanying article.

How to Make a City Flag

Get your Yard stick, sheers, Needle, and a big of bunting

Here is a sketch of the city flag as adopted by the city council. The design is fairly simple and anyone who is handy with pencil, sheers, and needle can produce a home-made flag that will flutter with the best of them. Flags may be made any size to suit the taste. The cloth may be purchased at most any dry goods store. Bunting stands up about the best and the colors of the national flag will do very well, although the blue in the Clarksburg flag is supposed to be brighter than usually appearing in Old Glory. The star is bright red, the circle and bars white and the field bright blue. In cutting cloth, margin for sewing should be provided for. The resolution says nothing about letters, but all flags that are to taken out of the city and many flown here will probably be lettered as shown in the diagram. The letters are three-fourths as high as the bars are wide, and fit between the circumference of concentric circles, spaced as indicated.

Too much work?

All right, wait and buy one from the store or from the souvenir committee of the Chamber of Commerce.
